How much longer until the utopic Solarpunk future where Capitalism is dead and we all live in ecologically sustainable high-tech forest cities? Asking for a friend.

Until we make those ecologically sustainable high-tech forest cities ourselves. It’s going to take a lot of us to do it though, so best to spread the word (and gather native tree seeds).

And, like, get started now. Then our “weirdo houses” will be the only thing functioning when everything falls apart!

The only reason why we don’t live in a solarpunk world right now is because no one has bothered to make it yet.

We’ll have to make it ourselves, and we’ll have to help each other make it. That’s why it is solarpunk

Some resources to consider creating or joining or doing:

Grow food in 5 gallon buckets

image
  • Learn how to repair a hole in the sole of a shoe
  • Learn some basics on passive solar design – clever use of the sun can create extremely energy efficient homes and buildings. You can use these principles to save on energy bills, even if you’re renting.
  • Free USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning, 2015 revision – cut down on personal food waste! Learn how to safely preserve food. Very useful if you suddenly harvest / purchase for crazy cheap in season / dumpster dive a ton of perishable food.
  • Donate to One Acre Fund, which provides training and capital to farmers (making them more productive and pulling them out of poverty) in various east African countries
  • Donate to Bridges to Prosperity, which provides technical expertise, money, and volunteers, to help local people build and maintain their own footbridges in extremely isolated rural areas
  • joining r/solarpunk, and sharing links/ideas/art/music with the community. Also, upvoting stuff for greater visibility. There’s over 900 members!

This is so great

Oh thank goodness for this. I just found out the town I’m moving to has a farmer’s market.

orcishbard:

on the topic of rewriting racist d&d narratives

it takes work, yes!

it’s worth it. for both you and your players, but especially for new players who can see the game in different ways than you

examples I’ve written that you should feel free to use:

-orcs: rather than give in to the weird “tribal savages who fight all the time,” consider connecting orcs and their inate strength/constitution to the earth. in my most recent campaign setting, orcs are descended from a human champion who bested an earth primordial; the primordial, impressed with their strength, blessed them and their descendents with powerful tusks and a greater constitution.

-drow: instead of the entire drow narrative being “they’re dark skinned and bad because they betrayed the fair skinned elves and their gods,” consider playing up their connection to spiders. perhaps they worshiped a spider God who gave them the ability to blend into their darkened surroundings. if you’re married to their current aesthetic appearance, take care to present multiple drow societies that have different outlooks; not a homogenous race of black skinned slavers. consider pigmentless drow, who’ve lost all skin color because they never see the light of day. drow who use echolocation? distancing your drow from the bad connotations carried by the current zeitgeist is a useful endeavor

-include elves of color in your game

-drop the ‘tribal’ aesthetic and the connotations that goblins and other monstrous races have. it’s lazy (note, tribes and other similar social structures are still perfectly valid social structures; but if the only example of them in your game world is the violent, monstrous people who seek to destory “civilized communities” that sends a bad message about real life tribes and their validity

-focus less on race and more on societies; a society can be evil or good, but a race cannot

-consider that fantasy races have no reason to conform to any gendered structures (especially our current human binary). dwarvish societies who express their varied and fluid genders through beard braiding. elvish societies who reproduce asexually. don’t limit yourself to what you can relate to from a 21st century human perspective

it takes a bit of elbow grease to decolonize your d&d, and the process is never done, but in my own experience, it’s only ever lead to more innovative and engaging experiences!

dungeonsanddrakes:

The Path of the Vessel! A Barbarian subclass centered around a monster of great power which has been trapped in a mortal prison. The Barbarian draws their strength from this creature and from it they are given greater powers. I think there’s a lot of chances for really cool flavor with this, especially if how the Barbarian became a Vessel plays a part in the character’s backstory. Could be very cool!
Sorry about the formatting, I tried to fit it all on one page, but with the way I size text for people who are on mobile it just wouldn’t fit.

For structures that have no entry steps, ConvertaStep also makes ramps of three sizes that come in a manual as well as automatic version.

(via ConvertaStep | Wheelchair Accessibility | Ramps | Convertastep – Freedom In Mobility)

This welcome mat converts into a fully accessible wheelchair ramp. Beautiful and functional design. I want it.

Some more info, for people who are interested.

First of all, I can’t believe this has almost 3,000 notes. I’m so glad that people are sharing this – both as a cool design, and also as an important accessibility feature.

Thanks to pseudosoph for linking to additional info (above) regarding weight limits, lift height, and product background – the creator is a wheelchair user himself! Very cool stuff. Keep sharing!

This isn’t a fail. Just wanted to share an accessibility win so people can get ideas for improving accessibility

The OTHER thing about this not mentioned: It’s not permanent.

Which means if you’re renting your home, you won’t get into trouble with/need permission from your landlord and can take it with you when you move.

i really like restraints that bind the sub to their dom somewhat. sub straddling your lap with their hands tied to the bed behind you? nice, they can’t get away from your teasing. sub wearing a collar with a leash you can hold? perfect, you can drag them around however you want. sub with a hand tied/cuffed to one of yours? well that’s just cute isn’t it. anything to make them feel owned and controlled but also loved and protected.
