Okay, I know this is diving deep into Unpopular Opinion territory, but: no, Megamind is not an example of how to do a superhero movie relationship right. The protagonist does not by any stretch of the imagination treat the female lead well – he just looks good by comparison because every other male character with a major speaking role is even worse. He’s still a self-absorbed, manipulative creep, and while he at least has the grace to feel bad about himself when he gets called out on it, there’s nothing in the narrative that suggests he ever arrives at a functional understanding of why his behaviour was out of line. He just performs a single grand gesture – which involves fixing a situation that he himself created in the first place, let’s keep in mind – and somehow that makes everything okay. Like we’ve never seen that before!
