Freshly cut hair must not be thrown into garbage, to prevent birds from taking it for their nests. Bats, too, gather people’s hair for the devils – thus anyone who is having it cut and leaves it behind helps demons multiply. It must be burned or, sometimes, hidden under the roof of the house. It may also be thrown in a river, so that it grows as long as the water is.
This part of the body is famously used in magic. The more casual example of it is hair of a young man placed by the icons to ensure his safe return from the army. A lock of hair can be used to gain control over, bewitch, or curse somebody – and one from the individual who cast the spell will help in lifting it. Loose hair is an attribute of many fecundity rites, but sets too much power free when worn unbraided and uncovered for no apparent reason, and thus is associated with witches.
Long hair is also associated with roads and passages; thus, in two instances it is undone not to twist the paths between worlds: during a baby’s birth and in the time of death in the family.
