some of you will say any period drama with corsets frilly dresses has “good costume design” when the majority are so basic
costume design is more than just historical accuracy and aesthetics it’s about story telling through the tiniest details whether it’s colour, pattern, texture, fabric, fit, silhouette, etc and institutions like the academy actually care very little for all the meaning behind costume designers work which is why they’ve usually only gone for the superficial period dramas
a few ppl are reblogging this saying “you can say the dress from beauty and the beast op” and i really want to note that jacqueline durran is one of my fav costume designers and did an fantastic job on the film (designing costumes for cgi is a WHOLE thing but she did that!), and that the tragic yellow dress was NOT HER FAULT it was actually EMMA WATSON who designed that one costume bc she felt corsets were oppressing her or some shit even tho literally every other costume she had was designed by ms durran specifically for her comfort, and this just drives home my point that costume design is such a disrespected art form bc we got hermione trying to tell them how to do their job
